Have you ever tried something new that completely blew your mind?

I’ve been singing since primary school, but I’ve never had the chance to sing gospel before. So, I was super excited when I was selected to participate at the London Symphony Orchestra’s Symphonic Gospel concert at the Barbican, as a member of the LSO Community Voices choir.

I have to admit, that my excitement lowered a little bit when I first saw the music. I was like: „Oh, well, this is super easy, I will get bored very soon.” Wow, how wrong I was! I couldn’t have made a hastier judgement!

What I found out about gospel music is, that the notes might be easy, but it just called me to put my whole soul into each and every note, phrase, melody, and word. Gospel demands your full presence, 200% intensity, energy, and emotion to channel the message of the song. It simply cannot be sung half-heartedly. The small nuances, subtleties make it so amazing to sing. There were times during the rehearsals when I had tears in my eyes, and I was giving thanks for being able to sing, and be part of events like this. Singing gospel is uplifting, joyful, and… exhausting. 😀

The professional and fun leadership of David Lawrence and Emily Dickens helped us to learn the songs quickly. Then guest coaches Brandon A Boyd, Clarence Hunte and Becky Thomas helped us to fine-tune the details to really sound like a gospel choir.

Putting all this together with the LSO, the conductor André J Thomas, and the soloists NaGuanda Nobles and Lurine Cato MBE was just the icing on the cake. What an experience, these are the moments in life that worth living for! 😊

Try something new. You never know, what you will enjoy doing. 😊
